On the afternoon of the 17th, the 15th science popularization event of the Chongqing trip “Science and China—Thousands of Academicians, Thousands of Science Popularizations” was successfully held at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. As the final event of the stem cell science popularization lecture series, Bian Xiuwu, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a professor at the Army Medical University, was invited to give a special lecture with the theme of "Double-Sided Stem Cells", focusing on core content such as cutting-edge research on stem cells, difficulties in tumor prevention and treatment, and pathological value. It brought a professional and interesting science popularization feast to more than 500 teachers and students on site, and unveiled the mystery of regenerative medicine and tumor research.

Academician Bian has been deeply engaged in the research field of cancer stem cells and tumor vascular immune microenvironment for many years, and has solid academic accumulation and rich practical experience. At the beginning of the lecture, he started from the basic knowledge of the origin of life, and systematically analyzed the core role and key position of stem cells in the field of regenerative medicine. He vividly compared stem cells to the "original paintbrush" that outlines life forms, with distinct "double-sided" characteristics: on the one hand, it can repair body damage and promote life regeneration, and is an important force in protecting life and health. ; On the other hand, once malignant transformation occurs, it will become the "seed" driving the development of tumors. At the same time, he also pointed out that compared with traditional chemical drugs and macromolecule biological drugs, stem cell technology can be called the third generation revolution in the field of biomedicine. It is a type of "living drug" and has broad application prospects. He emphasized that stem cell technology not only has extremely high value for people's livelihood, but is also related to national biosecurity and is a frontier strategic field focused on the country's layout.

In addition, Academician Bian deeply explained the unique value and core position of pathology in the modern medical system. He compared the image of pathology to a "judge" in the field of medical research. Through gross anatomy and microscopic observation, he can accurately determine the nature of the disease, predict the prognosis, and guide precise clinical medication. At the same time, pathology is also a key bridge connecting basic medicine and clinical medicine, an important support for the implementation of the precision medical system, and provides a core basis for modern clinical medical diagnosis and treatment.

The interactive session of the lecture had a lively atmosphere, and teachers and students had a strong desire for knowledge. Teachers and students on site actively asked questions and actively communicated on hot issues such as stem cell injection, organ transplantation, and daily scientific health care. Academician Bian gave a professional answer to the question of "whether healthy people should be injected with stem cells" that is widely concerned by the public. He said that the current relevant domestic policies only approve the application of stem cell technology in clinical scenarios where the disease is diagnosed and there are no other effective treatment options. Healthy people do not need to inject stem cells, and blind injections are not recommended. Blind intervention may not only disrupt the normal physiological balance of the human body, but may also face potential safety risks that have not been clinically verified.

At this point, the "Science and China - Thousands of Academicians, Thousands of Science Popularization Events" Chongqing [Stem Cell Science Popularization Lecture Tour] series of activities has come to a successful conclusion. This series of activities has invited a total of 15 academicians and experts, including Ji Weizhi, Bian Xiuwu, Dong Chen, Gu Ning, Li Jinsong, and Shi Yufang, to carry out 15 science popularization lectures in government agencies, universities, middle schools and primary schools, with a total offline audience exceeding 10,000 people, creating a strong atmosphere of talking about science, loving science, learning science, and applying science in the whole society, laying a solid foundation for cultivating scientific and technological reserve talents. The event was hosted by the Science Popularization and Education Working Committee of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, jointly organized by the Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Stem Cell Biology Branch of the Chinese Society of Cell Biology, and the Chongqing Science and Technology Association, and co-organized by Jinfeng Laboratory, the First Affiliated Hospital of the Army Medical University, and the Chongqing High-tech Zone Science and Technology Association.
